Oral Vs Transdermal Magnesium

  • 3 min read

We all need Magnesium. And the simple fact is that most of us aren’t getting enough of it through our diet so need to find an alternative source.

So why do we need it?

Magnesium is one of seven essential macro minerals in the body, and is involved in more than 300 biochemical reactions, including regulating blood pressure, maintaining a steady heart rhythm, and ensuring normal nerve and muscle function.

Whilst an essential mineral for everyone, it’s particularly important for athletes due to the integral role that it plays in energy production and recovery. Magnesium is an essential building block for hundreds of chemical processes in the body and our muscles’ ability to contract and relax is highly dependent on how much Magnesium our body is getting. Magnesium is used for metabolising nutrients and turning them into energy; the more we exercise and the harder we exercise, the faster our body burns this up and if we’re not getting enough Magnesium, this can result in low energy levels and problems with muscle function.

These needs are further compounded by the fact that our increasingly stressful lifestyles and poor dietary habits have resulted in so many us becoming deficient in this critical mineral. It’s therefore easy to see why Magnesium is having its Heyday and new products are appearing on the market with increasing regularity, each purporting to be better than the one before.

Historically we’ve had to rely on Magnesium supplements to redress that balance but now there are so many other alternatives and we can choose between tablets, sprays, oils, flakes and creams. It’s all pretty overwhelming so how do you know what is the most effective and which is the best one for you?

Is transdermal Magnesium more effective than taking an oral supplement?

In simple terms, we believe yes! Let me break it down for you.

Whilst we know that oral supplements can be very effective, they often come with unwanted side effects due to the path that they need to take through the digestive system, as meaningful quantities of Magnesium from dietary supplements have a tendency to create a laxative effect in many users, which means that a smaller overall percentage of Magnesium is absorbed.

Magnesium can also be hard to digest and absorb properly through the bowel wall if the digestive system is compromised by conditions such as IBS, so this is also an important consideration if you have associated health conditions.

To counter this, Magnesium can be absorbed transdermally. The word ‘transdermal’ refers to elements passing through the skin; transdermal Magnesium absorption therefore means that magnesium ions can pass into the epidermis, where they are quickly transported to cells throughout the body, avoiding problems with gastrointestinal irritation and diarrhea, through bypassing the digestive system entirely where many nutrients are lost.

Sounds like a no-brainer, right? Well, it’s not quite that straight-forward and all topical Magnesium products are far from equal; one of the key issues identified by researchers regarding the transdermal delivery of Magnesium has been getting it effectively through the skin, however our Abundant Magnesium Body Range has been developed specifically with this in mind and to overcome this. And that’s why we’re not like the rest!

The key inclusion of the organic citric acid – from our purpose bred cucumbers – into our Magnesium products promotes dermal penetration; it’s a powerful, natural exfoliant, which effectively removes dead skin cells, therefore preparing the skin to ensure maximum absorption of our highly concentrated Magnesium into the bloodstream so that it can get to work on aches and pains immediately. The organic citric acid from our purpose bred cucumbers is also vastly superior to the synthetic acids used in other Magnesium products available on the market place today.

Transdermal Magnesium is a powerful weapon in the battle against Magnesium deficiency and we think that our Magnesium Spray and Magnesium Gel are the obvious choices!
